(817) 533-0943Yes. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels with Stab-Lok breakers have a well-documented history of breakers that fail to trip during an overload or short circuit, in some testing more than half the time. That’s a fire and shock hazard, not just an outdated-equipment issue, which is why most licensed electricians recommend replacing an FPE panel rather than repairing around it.
Why FPE Panels Are Considered Dangerous
A circuit breaker’s entire job is to trip and cut power when it senses an overload or a short. Independent testing on FPE Stab-Lok breakers has found failure-to-trip rates far above the industry standard for other panel brands. When a breaker doesn’t trip, the wiring behind it keeps carrying more current than it’s rated for, which is how panel fires start. FPE panels were never issued a formal recall, so many are still installed in homes today, particularly in houses built before the mid-1980s.
How to Tell If You Have One
The panel door swings open for normal breaker access, and that’s as far as you should go. Look at the brand printed on the breakers themselves or on the inside of the door: “Federal Pacific Electric,” “FPE,” and “Stab-Lok” are the names to watch for. Don’t remove the dead front cover to look further inside; that’s a job for a licensed electrician. If your home was built or last rewired before the mid-1980s and the panel has never been replaced, it’s worth checking. Buzzing, warmth, or breakers that won’t reliably reset are additional signs your electrical panel is going bad, regardless of brand.
What to Do If You Have an FPE Panel
Because the risk is the breaker’s ability to trip and not any one visible symptom, an FPE panel can look and behave normally right up until it doesn’t. The standard recommendation from electricians and many home inspectors is a full panel replacement rather than a partial fix. Our guide on Federal Pacific and Zinsco panel dangers covers both brands in more depth, including what replacement typically involves.
