(817) 533-0943We don’t sell projectors, receivers, or surround-sound speakers. That’s for the AV company or the electronics store to handle. What we do is the electrical work underneath a home theater: the circuits, the in-wall power, the lighting, and the surge protection that make sure the equipment you bought actually has clean, adequate power to run on, instead of sharing a circuit with the kitchen or fighting flicker from a dimmer that wasn’t built for it.
Does a Home Theater Need Its Own Circuit?
Usually, yes. A receiver, a projector, a subwoofer, and a rack of streaming and gaming equipment add up to more continuous draw than most rooms were wired to handle on a single shared circuit, especially if that circuit also runs lighting or outlets elsewhere in the house. We run dedicated circuits for home theater equipment so the gear isn’t competing with anything else in the home for power, and so a vacuum or a hair dryer on another room’s circuit doesn’t cause a dip that a sensitive AV receiver will actually register. This also isolates the theater room’s electrical noise from the rest of the house wiring, which matters more with high-end audio equipment than people expect.
In-Wall Power for a Mounted TV
A wall-mounted TV with a power cord and three visible AV cables hanging down the wall looks like an unfinished job, and it usually is one. In-wall power kits let you run the TV’s power cord and low-voltage cables inside the wall cavity to a recessed outlet behind the TV, so nothing shows below the mount. Done to code, this means using a listed in-wall power kit, not just fishing a standard extension cord through the wall: regular extension cords aren’t rated to be enclosed inside a wall cavity, and it’s a fire code violation to install one that way. We install the correct in-wall rated kit, which keeps the install both clean-looking and safe.
What Does “To Code” Mean for a Mounted TV Install?
In general terms, it means the outlet behind the TV is a properly installed electrical box, the power run is on standard house wiring (not an extension cord run through the wall), and any low-voltage cable routed alongside it is separated correctly from the power wiring per your city’s adopted electrical code. It also means the outlet is accessible enough for future service, not sealed permanently behind drywall. We handle this as a standard part of home theater wiring, coordinating with whoever mounts the TV itself if that’s a separate installer.
Recessed and Dimmable Lighting
Theater rooms need lighting that can go from bright enough to find your seat to dark enough for real picture contrast, and that’s a dimmer and fixture question as much as it is a design one. We install recessed lighting on dimmer circuits sized for the fixtures you’re using, including LED-compatible dimmers, which matters because a dimmer that isn’t rated for LEDs is one of the most common causes of flicker and buzzing in a theater room. Accent lighting along steps or shelving is a common add-on here too, on its own low-level dimmer separate from the main room lights, and we’ll wire it as its own switch leg rather than tying it to the main light fixtures so you can set the room’s mood independent of the overheads.
Surge Protection for High-Value Equipment
A home theater setup can represent a serious equipment investment concentrated in one room, which makes it exactly the kind of space where surge protection is worth having at more than the outlet-strip level. A whole-house surge protector installed at the panel protects the theater equipment and everything else in the home from a surge event, rather than relying only on point-of-use protection at the equipment rack.
Working Alongside Your AV Installer
On most theater rooms, we’re one of two trades in the room: the AV company handles equipment, calibration, and speaker placement, and we handle the electrical infrastructure they’re plugging into. We coordinate on outlet locations, circuit counts, and low-voltage pathways so the electrical work is ready to go by the time the AV equipment shows up, instead of the AV installer finding out on install day that there isn’t enough power where the rack is going. If you already have an AV company lined up, we’re glad to work directly off their equipment plan rather than starting from scratch.
