(817) 533-0943Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors only work if they’re installed correctly, placed where they’ll actually catch a problem, and wired so that one detector going off means every detector in the house goes off. Neighbors Electric installs and replaces hardwired, interconnected smoke and CO detectors for homes across Fort Worth, and we’re upfront about what that involves — it’s electrical work, not just screwing a puck to the ceiling.
What This Service Covers, and When You Need It
This service covers new installation of hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replacement of units that have reached the end of their service life, and rewiring or repair of an interconnect system that isn’t working the way it should — where one unit sounds but the others in the house stay silent. Smoke detectors don’t last forever. Most manufacturers rate them for about ten years, and after that the sensor becomes less reliable even if the unit still “works” when you test it. If your detectors predate a recent renovation, if you’re not sure how old they are, or if you’re building an addition and need new interconnected coverage, that’s this service.
What We Actually Do
Hardwired detectors run on your home’s electrical system rather than relying on a battery alone, and they’re interconnected — wired together so that when one detects smoke, every detector in the house sounds, not just the one nearest the fire. We install detectors with battery backup so they keep working through a power outage, which is exactly when you don’t want a gap in coverage.
Placement follows accepted fire-safety practice: a detector in every bedroom, one outside each sleeping area, and at least one on every level of the home, including basements. Carbon monoxide detectors go near sleeping areas and, where the home has an attached garage or fuel-burning appliances like a gas furnace, water heater, or fireplace, near those areas too — CO is odorless and the placement is what makes early warning possible. For a lot of homes, combination smoke/CO units in the right spots cover both needs without doubling the number of devices on the ceiling.
Where we’re adding to an existing system, we run new interconnect wiring so the added units talk to the rest of the house rather than operating as isolated stand-alones. Where we’re replacing old units, we confirm the existing wiring is sound before reusing it, and we replace it if it isn’t. We aim to get every home’s detector system to current good practice — correct placement, correct interconnection, correct backup power — without cutting corners to save a trip.
Why Licensed Work Matters for Life-Safety Devices
A smoke or CO detector that’s wired wrong is worse than no detector at all, because it gives you false confidence. A loose interconnect wire, a detector on the wrong circuit, or a battery backup that isn’t actually functional can mean the system fails silently until the night it matters. Neighbors Electric is licensed under Texas Electrical Contractor License #41555, and we treat life-safety wiring with the same care we’d want in our own homes. Where local permitting applies to the work, we handle it; we don’t skip the paperwork to move faster.
If you’re already having other electrical work done — a panel upgrade, new outlet installation, or a remodel — it’s often worth bundling in a detector inspection or upgrade at the same time, since we’re already in the attic and walls. We can also pair this with a general electrical inspection if you want a full picture of your home’s system, not just the detectors.
Flat-Rate, No Guesswork
We quote detector installation and replacement work with flat-rate pricing up front, so you know the cost before we start — whether it’s one unit or a whole-house interconnected system. No pressure to buy more than your home actually needs, and no surprise line items after the fact.
