Code: SEASON25
(817) 533-0943Smoke alarms are required inside every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home including basements. In new construction, they must be hardwired, interconnected so every alarm sounds together, and have battery backup. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required near sleeping areas in homes with fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage.
Where smoke alarms are required
- Inside every bedroom, not just in the hallway outside it
- Outside each separate sleeping area, in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms it serves
- On every level of the home, including basements (a home with bedrooms upstairs and downstairs needs coverage on each level)
These requirements come from the International Residential Code (IRC), which Texas jurisdictions adopt and enforce locally. Fort Worth has adopted the 2021 IRC with local amendments, so exact requirements are enforced through the city’s Development Services Department. Some cities amend details like alarm sound frequency for certain occupancy types, so it’s worth confirming specifics with your city’s adopted code if you’re doing a permitted remodel.
Interconnection and power requirements
Where more than one smoke alarm is required in a home, they must be interconnected, meaning if one alarm goes off, they all go off. In new construction, alarms are required to be hardwired to the home’s electrical system with a battery backup, so they keep working through a power outage. Wireless interconnected alarms are generally accepted as an alternative to hardwiring in existing homes, which matters for retrofit projects where running new wire to every bedroom isn’t practical.
When carbon monoxide alarms are also required
Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside sleeping areas in homes that have any of the following:
- A fuel-burning appliance (gas furnace, gas water heater, gas range, etc.)
- A fireplace
- An attached garage with an opening into the home
If a fuel-burning appliance sits inside a bedroom or its attached bathroom, that room needs its own CO alarm in addition to the one outside sleeping areas.
When to call a licensed electrician
If your home has battery-only alarms scattered through it with no interconnection, that’s a common gap in older Fort Worth homes and an easy one to fix. It’s also worth a call if you’re not sure whether every level and sleeping area is actually covered, if alarms are more than 10 years old (the general replacement point for smoke alarms), or if you’re finishing a basement or adding a bedroom and need code-compliant coverage added.
Smoke and CO alarm placement is one of the simpler code items to get wrong quietly, since a missing or unconnected alarm doesn’t show itself until it’s needed. Neighbors Electric installs and interconnects smoke and CO alarms throughout Fort Worth to current code. If you’re not sure your home is covered, call (817) 533-0943 or see our smoke detector installation page. For other signs your home’s wiring needs a look, see our guide to electrical warning signs.
