(817) 533-0943Hot tubs and spas mix water and electricity in one enclosed space, which is exactly why the National Electrical Code devotes an entire article — Article 680 — to getting this wiring right. Neighbors Electric installs and wires hot tubs and spas for homes across Fort Worth, from a straightforward 120V plug-in unit to a hardwired 240V spa that needs a dedicated circuit run from the panel.
What Hot Tub & Spa Wiring Involves
Not every spa needs the same electrical work. Portable, plug-in spas typically run on a standard 120V GFCI-protected outlet built for the purpose. Larger hardwired spas — the kind with a built-in heater, multiple pumps, and jets — run on a dedicated 240V circuit sized specifically for that unit’s electrical demand. We wire both, and we tell you honestly which one your spa actually needs rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.
This service covers running a new dedicated circuit from your panel, installing the correct disconnect, sizing the wire and breaker to the spa’s nameplate rating, and bonding the metal components around the spa as the code requires. If your spa is replacing an older unit, we also check whether the existing wiring and disconnect still meet current requirements before reusing them — older installations are commonly out of date on GFCI protection or disconnect placement.
What NEC Article 680 Actually Requires
Article 680 is the section of the electrical code covering pools, spas, and other water-based installations, and it sets several requirements that aren’t optional:
- A dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit. The circuit feeding the spa — whether it’s a 120V outlet or a hardwired 240V connection — must have ground-fault circuit interrupter protection. This is the single most important safety feature on a spa circuit, since it shuts power off fast if current starts leaking anywhere it shouldn’t.
- An emergency disconnect within sight of the spa. Code requires a clearly accessible disconnecting means installed at least 5 feet from the water’s edge but still within direct line of sight of the spa, so it can be reached and used quickly in an emergency without having to walk back inside the house.
- Correct wire and breaker sizing. Every spa has a nameplate rating for voltage and amperage. The circuit has to be sized to that rating — undersized wire or an incorrectly rated breaker is a fire risk, not just a code violation.
- Equipotential bonding. Metal parts near the spa — the equipment enclosure, metal piping, and other conductive components within the bonding zone — need to be electrically bonded together. This equalizes voltage across everything you might touch while in or near the water, which is what actually prevents shock, separate from the GFCI protection.
None of this is optional or a matter of preference. It’s the difference between a spa installation that’s safe to step into and one that isn’t.
Permits, Inspection, and Why Licensing Matters
Spa wiring typically requires a permit and inspection, and for good reason — this is one of the few residential electrical jobs where a mistake can be lethal, not just inconvenient. Neighbors Electric is licensed under Texas Electrical Contractor License #41555, and we pull permits and schedule inspections on spa installations rather than treating that step as optional. If your existing panel doesn’t have room for a new 240V spa circuit, we’ll tell you before we start, and a panel upgrade may need to happen first — that’s a common gap on older homes adding a spa for the first time. We also install the required GFCI protection as part of the job, whether that’s a GFCI receptacle for a plug-in unit or GFCI breaker protection at the panel for a hardwired spa.
Flat-Rate Pricing, Done Right the First Time
We quote spa wiring jobs with flat-rate pricing after seeing the spa’s nameplate specs and your panel’s current capacity — no guessing, no change orders halfway through. Whether you’re installing a new hot tub or bringing an older spa circuit up to current code, we’ll walk you through exactly what’s required and why before any work starts.
