(817) 533-0943Most garages get wired once, when the house is built, for a light fixture and a couple of outlets: and then everyone tries to run a shop, a gym, an EV charger, and a chest freezer off that same setup for the next twenty years. Garage wiring is one of the most common upgrade calls we get in Fort Worth, because the way people actually use a garage almost never matches what the original electrician planned for.
Added Outlets and Circuits
The most basic upgrade is simple: more outlets, on their own circuits, so you’re not running a shop vac and a mini-fridge and a set of shop lights off one 15-amp circuit that was never meant for any of it. We add outlets along workbenches, at the ceiling for garage door openers, and near where you actually park, and we split high-draw equipment onto its own circuit so it’s not fighting everything else in the garage for power.
Do Garage Outlets Need GFCI Protection?
Yes: garages are one of the locations where the NEC has required GFCI protection on outlets for years, because a garage floor is exactly the kind of damp, concrete environment where a ground fault turns dangerous fast. If your garage still has ungrounded or non-GFCI outlets, that’s a code and safety gap worth closing, not just an inconvenience. We add GFCI protection as standard on any garage outlet work, whether that’s a single new outlet or a full rewire, and we’ll check the rest of the garage’s existing outlets while we’re there rather than only touching the one you called about.
Garage Lighting
Factory garage lighting is usually one fixture in the middle of the ceiling, which leaves the corners and the workbench dark no matter how bright that single bulb is. We add fixtures where the light actually needs to land: over a workbench, along the length of the space, at the sides where cars block the center light. It’s a straightforward job in most garages, since the wiring run is short and the ceiling is usually open joists or easy attic access. We’ll also put fixtures on their own switch, or split them across two switches, so you’re not lighting the whole garage just to grab something off a shelf near the door.
240V Circuits for Compressors, Welders, and Shop Equipment
If your garage doubles as a shop, standard 120V outlets aren’t going to run a welder or a real air compressor. That equipment needs its own 240V circuit, sized and configured to match the equipment’s nameplate rating, not just plugged in through an adapter. We run these as dedicated circuits, which keeps shop equipment from tripping breakers shared with anything else in the garage and keeps the wiring rated for what it’s actually carrying.
What If the Garage Needs More Power Than the Main Panel Has Left?
This comes up more than people expect, especially with detached garages or shops that have grown to include several 240V tools, extra lighting, and a full outlet layout. When the load starts adding up, a subpanel in the garage is often the better answer than trying to squeeze more circuits out of the main panel. A subpanel gives the garage its own breaker space, cuts down on long wire runs back to the house panel for every new circuit, and makes room for future additions without another trip back to the main panel.
Prepping the Garage for an EV Charger
Garages are also where most home EV chargers end up, and that’s worth planning for even if you’re not installing the charger today. An EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, sized to the charger and the vehicle, and run to wherever the car actually parks. If you’re already doing garage wiring work, it’s worth having us rough in the conduit and breaker space for a charger now, even if the charger itself goes in later.
Licensed Work, Flat-Rate Quotes
Neighbors Electric is licensed under TECL #41555. Garage wiring covers a wide range of scope, from adding one outlet to running a full subpanel and shop circuits, and we quote it flat-rate based on what your garage actually needs: not a generic per-outlet rate. We check the panel’s available capacity, confirm GFCI protection where it’s required, and size any 240V circuits to the equipment before work starts, so the number we give you is the number you pay. If a walkthrough turns up old wiring, a missing ground, or a subpanel that makes more sense than the outlet count you originally asked for, we’ll explain why before adding it to the quote, not after the work is already done.
