(817) 533-0943Pool wiring is not treated like the rest of the house wiring in your Fort Worth home, and for good reason. Water and electricity share a footprint around a pool deck, so the National Electrical Code sets a separate, more demanding set of rules for it in Article 680. Get any piece of it wrong, and you have a shock hazard sitting a few feet from where your family swims. Neighbors Electric handles pool electrical work for Fort Worth and DFW homeowners — new pool builds, equipment replacements, and safety retrofits on pools that have been in the ground for years.
What Pool Electrical Work Involves
NEC 680 is the section of the code that governs permanently installed pools, spas, and the equipment around them. It is built around one idea: everything metal near the water needs to be at the same electrical potential, and everything that could energize needs a fast-acting ground-fault breaker behind it. In practice, that means:
- Equipotential bonding grid. The pool shell, structural rebar or steel, coping, ladders, handrails, underwater light housings, and the pump itself all get tied together with a bonding conductor so no part of that system can become energized relative to another part. This is the piece inspectors check hardest, and it is the piece most often missing or degraded on older pools.
- GFCI protection. Pump motors, underwater lighting, and any receptacle near the pool need ground-fault circuit interrupter protection. If the GFCI trips, it is doing its job — it is cutting power before a fault can reach someone in the water.
- Receptacle placement. Code sets minimum and maximum distances between the pool edge and any receptacle, and dictates which ones must be GFCI-protected. General-purpose receptacles typically fall somewhere between six and twenty feet from the pool’s edge, close enough to be useful and far enough to keep cords and plugs away from wet skin.
- Pump and equipment circuits. Pool pumps, heaters, and salt chlorine generators need dedicated circuits sized correctly for the motor or heating element, with disconnects located where code requires them.
- Low-voltage pool lighting. Many newer pool lights run on low-voltage transformers rather than line voltage, which changes the wiring approach but not the bonding requirement.
- Panel capacity. A pump, a heater, and pool lighting add real load. If your panel is already tight, adding a pool can be the thing that pushes it past its limit.
We also get called to older Fort Worth pools where the bonding grid was never installed correctly, or has corroded over the years, or where a pump replacement was done without pulling a permit. If you are buying a house with a pool and the electrical work looks like a DIY job, that is worth a second look before you close.
How We Approach a Pool Electrical Job
We start by looking at what is actually there, not what the plans say should be there. On an existing pool, that means opening the equipment pad, checking the bonding grid with a continuity test, and verifying GFCI protection on every circuit that needs it. On a new pool build, we work from the pool contractor’s layout and plan the panel circuit, bonding grid, and equipment pad wiring before conduit goes in the ground.
Pool work requires a permit and inspection in Fort Worth, and we treat that as part of the job, not an extra step. An uninspected pool electrical system is a liability you are carrying whether or not anyone has flagged it yet. We pull the permit, do the work to pass inspection the first time, and give you a straight answer if something on an existing pool needs to be brought up to current code.
If your existing setup needs an electrical panel upgrade to carry the added pump and heater load, we will tell you that up front rather than after the job is half-wired. Pool equipment circuits are a natural fit for a dedicated, properly breakered circuit rather than sharing space with something else on an old panel.
Why the License Matters Here
Pool electrical work is one of the areas where an unlicensed shortcut is genuinely dangerous, not just a code technicality. A missing or corroded bond, a GFCI wired to look right but not test right, a receptacle set a few feet too close to the water — none of that shows up until someone gets hurt. Neighbors Electric is licensed under Texas Electrical Contractor License #41555. We pull the permit, we test what we install, and we do not leave a pool job half-documented.
A Straight Answer, Before We Start
We give you a flat rate before any work begins, based on what we actually find at your pool equipment pad or your pool contractor’s plan, not a number that grows once we are on site. If you have questions about whether your current pool wiring is up to code, that first look is part of the conversation, not a separate charge.
Call (817) 533-0943 or request a quote online to schedule pool electrical work, or ask us to take a look at an existing pool before you assume it is fine. We also handle related work like GFCI outlet installation and electrical inspections for Fort Worth homeowners.
