(817) 533-0943Recessed lighting installation is the process of setting light fixtures into the ceiling itself so the housing, wiring, and trim sit flush instead of hanging down like a traditional fixture. Done well, it gives a room even, glare-free light without a fixture competing for attention. Done poorly, it means mismatched spacing, dark corners, cans that hum or flicker, or worse, a fire hazard from insulation packed against a housing that was never rated for it. Neighbors Electric installs recessed lighting throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area, and we treat the layout and the wiring with the same care, not just the fixture.
Neighbors Electric is licensed (TECL #41555) and serves Crowley, Fort Worth, and the greater DFW area. Call (817) 533-0943 or visit our contact page to schedule an estimate.
How Recessed Lighting Installation Works
The process starts with the housing, the metal can that sits above the ceiling line and holds the bulb and wiring. There are two basic categories, and which one applies to your project depends on whether the ceiling is open or already finished.
New-Construction Housings
New-construction housings get installed before drywall goes up, while the ceiling joists and framing are still exposed. They’re mounted directly to the framing with brackets, which gives a rock-solid installation, but it only works when you’re already opening up the ceiling for a remodel or new build. If you’re adding recessed lighting to a finished room, this isn’t the option.
Remodel Housings
Remodel (or old-work) housings are built to install through a hole cut in existing drywall, with spring clips or bar hangers that grab the back side of the ceiling to hold the can in place. Most recessed lighting jobs in existing Fort Worth homes use remodel housings, since they don’t require tearing the ceiling open. Fitting them correctly still takes precision, because the hole has to be cut to the exact diameter of the housing, in the right spot, without hitting a joist, duct, or existing wire run.
IC-Rated vs. Non-IC Housings
If the space above the ceiling is insulated, which is true for most attic ceilings and many second-floor ceilings in Fort Worth homes, the housing has to be IC-rated, meaning rated for insulation contact. A non-IC-rated can pressed up against attic insulation is a genuine fire risk, because it isn’t built to dissipate heat with insulation packed around it. We check the ceiling cavity before we recommend a housing, not after.
Planning the Layout and Spacing
Even light distribution comes down to spacing, and spacing depends on ceiling height, beam angle, and what the room is used for. A common starting point is roughly half the ceiling height as the distance between cans (an 8-foot ceiling might use fixtures spaced around 4 feet apart), but that’s a guideline, not a formula that applies everywhere. A kitchen island, a reading chair, or a piece of art usually calls for a dedicated can rather than relying on general room spacing. We walk the room, note where the light actually needs to fall, and lay out fixture locations before any drywall gets cut.
LED Trims and Dimming
Nearly every recessed lighting installation we do today uses LED, either as an LED retrofit trim in a standard housing or as an integrated LED module built into the housing itself. LEDs run cooler, last longer, and use a fraction of the power of the old incandescent trims. If you want dimming, the dimmer switch and the LED driver have to be compatible; not every dimmer works with every LED trim, and a mismatch shows up as flicker, buzzing, or a light that won’t dim below a certain level. We match the switch to the fixture so dimming works the way it’s supposed to from day one.
Common Situations Homeowners Call Us For
- Replacing a dated ceiling fixture with a cleaner recessed layout in a kitchen or living room
- Adding cans over a kitchen island, vanity, or reading nook that’s currently underlit
- Retrofitting recessed lighting into a finished ceiling without tearing it open
- Correcting an existing recessed lighting job that’s flickering, buzzing, or has visible gaps between fixtures
- Adding recessed lighting as part of a larger remodel, alongside new light fixture installation or a new ceiling fan installation
What the Installation Includes
A typical recessed lighting job with us covers the layout walkthrough, cutting the ceiling openings, running or tapping into circuit wiring, mounting the housings, wiring and testing each fixture, installing trims, and confirming the switch (including any dimmer) works correctly. If the circuit doesn’t have enough capacity for the added fixtures, we’ll flag that before starting, not after the ceiling is already cut open.
Why Hire a Licensed Electrician for This
Recessed lighting looks like a straightforward swap, but most of the actual risk is hidden above the ceiling line. Attic access alone is enough to stop most DIY attempts, between insulation, low clearance, and the need to work around existing wiring and framing without damaging either. Beyond access, there’s the electrical work itself: tying into an existing circuit safely, sizing the circuit for the added load, keeping wire connections inside approved boxes, and maintaining the fire clearance an IC-rated housing requires around insulation. A miswired connection or an unrated housing packed with insulation isn’t a cosmetic problem, it’s a fire risk that can sit hidden in the ceiling for years. Neighbors Electric is licensed (TECL #41555) and pulls permits where the work requires it, so the wiring above your ceiling meets code, not just the trim you see below it.
A Note on Pricing
Recessed lighting cost varies with the number of fixtures, whether the ceiling is open or finished, attic accessibility, and whether existing wiring can be reused or new circuits are needed. We don’t quote a project sight unseen. What we can say is that remodel installations in an already-insulated, finished ceiling typically run more per fixture than new-construction installs, simply because of the extra labor involved in cutting, fishing wire, and working blind above the ceiling. We’ll give you a firm number after we’ve actually looked at the space. For more detail on what drives the cost of a job like this, see our recessed lighting installation guide.
