(817) 533-0943Most Fort Worth homeowners pay $100 to $300 per light for professional recessed lighting installation, depending on whether the ceiling is open (new construction) or already finished (retrofit). A typical room of 4 to 6 lights runs $500 to $1,800 installed. The exact price depends on your ceiling, wiring, and fixture choice.
Typical cost by installation type
| Installation type | Typical cost per light | Typical cost for a 4-6 light room |
|---|---|---|
| New construction (open ceiling, wiring exposed) | $100 – $200 | $500 – $1,100 |
| Remodel/retrofit can housing (finished ceiling) | $150 – $300 | $750 – $1,800 |
| Canless LED wafer light (retrofit, no housing) | $150 – $280 | $700 – $1,650 |
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Your actual price depends on ceiling height, attic access, how far the electrician has to run wire, and the fixture grade you choose.
Why remodel installs cost more than new construction
In new construction, the ceiling is still open, so an electrician can run wire and mount housings before the drywall goes up. That’s the cheapest scenario per light. In a remodel or retrofit, the drywall is already up, so the job adds steps: cutting a precise hole, fishing wire through the joist bay to the fixture location, and patching and finishing the ceiling around the trim. That extra labor is why retrofit installs typically run 20 to 40 percent more per light than new construction.
Canless LED wafer lights vs traditional can housings
A canless wafer light skips the metal can entirely. It’s a thin LED disc that mounts to the ceiling opening itself and wires directly into the circuit, which can save some labor compared to setting a full retrofit housing, especially in tight joist bays. A traditional can housing still makes sense when you want a deeper trim option or are matching existing recessed lights in the same room. Either style works whether or not there’s usable attic space above — see our guide on installing recessed lighting without attic access for how that changes the approach.
What else changes the price
- Ceiling height and access. Vaulted or second-floor ceilings with no attic above take longer to wire.
- Circuit availability. If the room needs a new circuit or the panel is near capacity, that adds cost beyond the per-light number.
- Dimmer switches and smart controls. Adding a dimmer is a small add-on, usually $50 to $150 per switch.
- Fixture quality. Basic LED trims cost less than adjustable, color-tunable, or high-CRI fixtures.
Every home is different, and the only way to get an exact number is to have an electrician look at the ceiling and the circuit it will run on.
