A subpanel is a second breaker box fed from your main panel, and it’s the right move any time you’re adding a bunch of new circuits to one area of the property (a garage, a shop, an addition, or a detached building) instead of running every individual circuit all the way back to the main panel.

What a Subpanel Does

Instead of pulling a dozen separate wires from your main panel to a workshop across the yard, you run one properly sized feeder to a subpanel installed at the workshop, and then branch circuits for outlets, lighting, and equipment come off that subpanel locally. It’s more efficient wiring, it’s easier to add circuits later without opening up the main panel again, and it puts a disconnect closer to where the work is actually happening.

Where Do Subpanels Make Sense?

The common calls we get in Fort Worth:

  • Detached garages being converted to a shop, gym, or living space
  • New additions that need several circuits in one part of the house
  • Workshops and hobby spaces running welders, compressors, or power tools
  • Detached buildings like a barn, guest house, or pool house that need their own power
  • Homes where the main panel is full and adding one more circuit isn’t an option without freeing up space

The size and use of the space usually drives the decision. A garage with a couple of outlets and a light might get by on one or two circuits pulled directly from the main panel. A converted garage with a mini-split, a workbench full of tools, and overhead lighting on its own switch is a different scope, and that’s where a subpanel starts paying for itself. You get room to add circuits later without another trip back to the main panel every time.

How Big Does the Feeder Need to Be?

This is where a subpanel job lives or dies, and it’s not a guess. It comes from a load calculation. We add up what the subpanel actually needs to carry: lighting, outlets, any dedicated equipment circuits, and reasonable room to grow, and size the feeder conductor and the breaker feeding it accordingly. Undersizing the feeder is one of the most common mistakes we find on other people’s work, and it’s also one of the more dangerous ones, since a feeder that’s too small for its load runs hot under normal use, not just during a fault.

That same load calculation has to look upstream, too. A subpanel doesn’t create power (it distributes power that has to come from somewhere) so we also check whether your main panel and service actually have the capacity to feed it. If your home is already close to its limit, adding a subpanel without addressing that first just moves the capacity problem to a new location. Sometimes that means the subpanel job is straightforward; other times it points to a service upgrade being the real first step, or at least a panel upgrade to free up space and capacity in the main panel.

Neutral and Ground Bonding at a Subpanel

One of the code details that trips up a lot of DIY subpanel work: neutral and ground have to be kept separate at a subpanel, on their own buses, with the subpanel’s enclosure grounded back to the main panel rather than bonded to neutral locally. Bonding them together at a subpanel the way they’re bonded at the main panel creates a parallel path for current that shouldn’t be there, and it’s one of the more common code violations we find when we’re called out to fix a problem someone else installed. We handle that separation correctly as a matter of course, and it’s part of what an inspector is checking for.

Permits and Inspection

Subpanel installation requires a permit in Fort Worth. We pull it, size the feeder and subpanel to the load calculation, and get the finished installation inspected. That’s the record that shows the shop, addition, or detached building was wired to code: something that matters if you ever sell the property or need to file an insurance claim involving that space.

Subpanel or Just More Breakers?

Not every project needs a full subpanel. If your main panel has open slots and the load calculation shows room, running a few individual dedicated circuits straight from the main panel can be simpler and cheaper. A subpanel earns its cost when you’re dealing with distance (a detached structure, a garage across the driveway) or when you’re adding enough circuits at once that a single feeder and local panel make more sense than a dozen separate runs. We’ll tell you honestly which one your project actually calls for rather than defaulting to the bigger job.

Flat-Rate Pricing

We quote subpanel installation flat-rate after doing the load calculation and confirming what your main panel and service can support. One number, before work starts, covering the feeder run, the subpanel, and the permit.
