(817) 533-0943A bad electrical panel usually shows warning signs before it becomes a real hazard, but they’re easy to write off as one-off quirks. Breakers that trip often, a panel cover that feels warm to the touch, buzzing or a burning smell near the panel, and lights that flicker across the house are the most common signals that a panel needs a closer look from a licensed electrician.
Warning Signs to Check For
- Breakers that trip repeatedly, especially without an obvious overload cause
- A burning smell near the panel, even faint
- Warm or hot panel cover when you touch it (turn off power and call an electrician if this happens)
- Buzzing, crackling, or humming sounds coming from the panel
- Flickering or dimming lights, particularly when a large appliance kicks on
- Visible rust, scorch marks, or corrosion on or around the panel
- Breakers that feel loose or don’t stay firmly in the “on” position
- A panel that’s a Federal Pacific or Zinsco brand, which carries known reliability issues regardless of other symptoms
- The panel is undersized for what your home now runs — frequent breaker trips as you add appliances is a common tell
Any one of these on its own is worth a call. If you’re noticing more than one, treat it as a priority rather than something to monitor.
What to Do If You Notice These Signs
If you smell burning or the panel cover is hot, that’s not a “schedule it for next week” situation — shut off what you safely can and call an electrician right away. For the other signs, a panel inspection will tell you whether you’re looking at a simple repair, a full panel upgrade, or just added capacity for what your home now needs.
If your panel turns out to be a Federal Pacific or Zinsco model, that’s a separate and well-documented concern beyond normal wear — see Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels: why they’re dangerous for details. And if the issue turns out to be that your panel simply doesn’t have enough capacity anymore, 100-amp vs. 200-amp panel can help you figure out what size you actually need.
