(817) 533-0943If your home in Fort Worth or the surrounding DFW area was built between the 1950s and the late 1970s, there’s a reasonable chance your electrical panel is either a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panel or a Zinsco panel. Both brands were widely installed for decades, and both have a well-documented history of reliability problems that go beyond normal wear and tear. This isn’t about age alone — it’s about a design and manufacturing issue specific to these two brands.
The Core Problem: Breakers That May Not Trip
A circuit breaker’s entire job is to trip and cut power when a circuit is overloaded or shorted. That’s the safety function that prevents overheating and fire. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers and Zinsco breakers have been documented over many years to sometimes fail to trip when they should, even under conditions that would trip a properly functioning breaker. When a breaker doesn’t trip during an overload, the wiring behind it can overheat, and that’s where the fire risk comes from.
This has been studied and reported on for decades, including by independent testing organizations and inspection industry groups, which is why home inspectors in older markets routinely flag these panels and why many insurance carriers ask about panel brand during underwriting.
How to Tell What You Have
You don’t need to be an electrician to get a first read on your panel. Open the panel cover (without touching anything inside) and look at the branding on the breakers and the panel door:
- Federal Pacific / FPE Stab-Lok panels usually say “Federal Pacific Electric” or “FPE” on the panel or breakers, often with a red, white, and blue logo, and breakers that stab directly onto a bus bar (hence “Stab-Lok”).
- Zinsco panels typically say “Zinsco” or later “Sylvania-Zinsco” on the panel door, with breakers that also plug directly onto the bus rather than bolting on.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, that’s a normal reason to have a licensed electrician take a look rather than guessing.
Why “It’s Never Tripped a Problem Yet” Isn’t Reassuring
The unsettling part of this issue is that a panel with this problem can look and behave completely normally for years. Lights work, outlets work, nothing seems off — right up until a breaker is actually called on to trip during a real overload and doesn’t. That’s a hard thing to test for casually, which is exactly why these panels are treated as a known risk category rather than something to wait out.
Why These Panels Are Still Common in DFW
Federal Pacific and Zinsco were both major manufacturers during the decades when a lot of Fort Worth’s older neighborhoods were built out, so it’s not unusual at all to find one of these panels in a home that’s otherwise been well maintained. The panel itself doesn’t announce that it’s a problem — it looks like any other panel from the outside, and most homeowners have no reason to know the brand name carries a history until an inspector, appraiser, or electrician points it out. That’s exactly why it’s worth checking proactively rather than waiting for a home sale or insurance renewal to bring it up.
Insurance and Home Sale Considerations
Because this is a well-documented issue in the inspection and insurance industries, it’s common for a home inspector to flag a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel during a sale, and for some insurance carriers to ask about panel brand or require replacement before issuing or renewing a policy. Even if you’re not planning to sell soon, it’s worth knowing this could come up later, and that replacing the panel now on your own timeline is usually easier than being forced into it during a sale or renewal deadline.
What We Recommend
If you know or suspect you have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, the standard recommendation from most electricians and inspectors is a full panel assessment, with replacement being the typical outcome rather than a partial repair. These panels generally aren’t worth patching breaker by breaker — the concern is with the panel and breaker design itself, not one bad component.
A replacement is a normal electrical panel upgrade, done by a licensed electrician, with a permit and inspection like any other panel work. It’s also a reasonable time to evaluate whether you should move from 100-amp to 200-amp service while the panel is already being replaced — see 100-amp vs. 200-amp panel for that comparison.
What It Typically Costs
Replacing a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel is priced similarly to any other panel replacement, sometimes slightly higher due to the extra care taken during removal. Our electrical panel upgrade cost guide breaks down typical ranges for the Fort Worth area.
Other Warning Signs Worth Checking
Brand is one thing to check, but there are other signs your panel needs attention regardless of who made it — breakers that trip repeatedly, a warm panel cover, or a burning smell near the panel. See how do I know if my electrical panel is bad for the full list.
