(817) 533-0943Most homeowners in Fort Worth pay $300 to $700 for a whole-house surge protector installed, depending on the type of device and how much work it takes to add it to your panel. A basic Type 2 device installed at the panel lands toward the lower end of that range. A Type 1 device installed at the service entrance, or a job that needs extra breaker space or panel work, runs higher. The number for your house depends on your panel and your service, and the only way to get an exact price is to have an electrician look at both.
What’s the Difference Between a Type 1 and Type 2 Surge Protector?
A Type 1 device installs ahead of the main breaker, at or near the service entrance, and is sized to handle the biggest surges: a nearby lightning strike or the utility grid switching load. A Type 2 device installs inside or right next to the panel and handles smaller surges that start inside the house, mostly from equipment cycling on and off. Your AC compressor, refrigerator, and well pump (if you have one) all create small internal surges every time they kick on, and those add up to more actual damage over a year than lightning does. A lot of installations include both, since a Type 1 device on its own doesn’t catch what starts inside the walls.
Whole-House Surge Protector Cost by Type
| Device Type | What It Protects Against | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|---|
| Type 1 SPD | Lightning and surges coming in from the utility grid | $300 – $700 |
| Type 2 SPD | Surges generated inside the house by appliances and HVAC equipment cycling | $250 – $450 |
| Type 1 and Type 2 combined | Both external and internal surges | $500 – $900 |
What Drives the Price Up or Down
- Panel age and brand. Some older panels need an adapter or extra breaker space to fit the device, which adds labor. A panel that’s already full of breakers may need work just to make room.
- Overhead vs. underground service. Where your service line comes into the house affects how and where a Type 1 device gets placed, and how much conduit or wire run it takes to get there.
- Whether it’s bundled with other panel work. Adding a surge protector while an electrician is already inside your panel for another job, like a breaker swap or a panel upgrade, is usually cheaper than a stand-alone visit just for the device.
- The device’s surge current rating. Higher-rated devices (measured in kA) cost more up front but handle bigger surges before they need replacing, so they tend to last longer in a storm-heavy area.
- New construction vs. retrofit. A retrofit onto an existing panel can take more labor than wiring one in during a new panel or service install, since the electrician has to work around what’s already there.
- Panel accessibility. A panel in an easy-to-reach garage or utility room costs less labor to work on than one buried in a tight attic or crawlspace.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Most whole-house surge protector installs take an hour or two once the electrician is on site, assuming the panel has room and doesn’t need other work first. If the job turns up a full panel, an outdated breaker, or a grounding issue that needs to be fixed before the device can go in, plan on more time. Power to the house typically needs to be off for part of the install, which is normal and something your electrician will walk you through before starting.
Does Fort Worth Code Require a Surge Protector?
Sometimes. Fort Worth’s adopted electrical code requires a Type 1 or Type 2 surge-protective device on any new dwelling service, and on any service equipment that’s being replaced. That rule (NEC 230.67) first appeared in the 2020 National Electrical Code and carried forward into the 2023 edition Fort Worth now enforces. So if you’re getting a new panel or a new service installed, the surge protector is already required as part of that job, and Neighbors Electric builds it into the scope. If your existing service isn’t being touched, code doesn’t require you to retrofit one onto it, though plenty of homeowners choose to add one anyway.
Why DFW Homes Deal With More Surges Than People Expect
North Texas gets frequent thunderstorms and fast-moving summer lines that spike voltage on the grid before a breaker ever has a reason to trip. But most of the surges that actually damage a refrigerator, a garage door opener, or an HVAC control board aren’t dramatic lightning strikes. They’re smaller spikes from the grid switching load, or from your own AC compressor cycling on, happening dozens of times a year without you ever noticing until something quits working.
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
Call an electrician instead of reaching for a plug-in strip if you’ve had appliances or electronics fail repeatedly for no clear reason, if you’re already getting a panel upgrade or new service, if you have expensive equipment tied to a single circuit (a home theater, a sump pump, a home office setup), or if your insurance company asks about surge protection after a claim. A plug-in surge protector only protects what’s plugged into it. A whole-house device protects everything downstream of the panel at once.
