Code: SEASON25
(817) 533-0943Most homes benefit from one, but it’s required by code only when you’re getting a new electrical service or a panel replacement. If your panel isn’t being touched, a whole-house surge protector is optional, though it’s worth adding if you have a lot of connected electronics, a well pump, solar equipment, or you’ve already lost an appliance to a surge.
When Code Requires One
Fort Worth’s adopted electrical code requires a Type 1 or Type 2 surge-protective device on any new dwelling service and on any service equipment that’s being replaced (NEC 230.67, carried into the 2023 NEC from the 2020 edition). If Neighbors Electric is installing a new panel upgrade or a new service for you, the surge protector is already part of that job.
When It’s Worth Adding Even if Code Doesn’t Require It
- Homes with a lot of connected electronics, computers, or home theater equipment
- Homes with a well pump, sump pump, or irrigation controller
- Homes with solar panels or a battery backup system
- Anyone who’s already lost an appliance or electronics to a power surge
North Texas’s frequent summer storms make internal surges, like an AC compressor cycling or the grid switching load, a routine event rather than a rare one.
What a Whole-House Unit Does That a Power Strip Doesn’t
A plug-in surge protector only guards what’s plugged into it. A whole-house device sits at the panel and protects everything on every circuit at once, including hardwired equipment a power strip can’t reach, like your HVAC system, water heater, and garage door opener. It also catches a surge before it reaches any of your plug-in strips, so the two work best as layers rather than one replacing the other.
How Do You Know If Your Panel Already Has One?
Some newer panels come with a surge protector built in, and some homeowners had one added during a past panel upgrade without realizing it. The only reliable way to check is to have an electrician open the panel and look, since it’s not something you can confirm from the breaker labeling alone.
If you’re not sure whether your panel already has one, or whether adding one makes sense for your house, Neighbors Electric can check it during a panel upgrade or on its own. See what a whole-house surge protector typically costs installed, or call (817) 533-0943 to talk through your whole-house surge protector installation options.
