(817) 533-0943The most common reasons a standby generator won’t start are a weak or dead battery, a fuel supply problem, a low-oil shutdown, or the controller sitting in “Off” instead of “Auto.” Most of these show up as a fault code or warning light on the generator’s control panel, which is the first place to look before assuming the worst.
Common causes of a no-start
- Weak or dead battery. Standby generators use a small 12-volt battery to crank the engine, and it’s the single most common cause of a no-start. Batteries typically last two to three years and weaken gradually, so this is worth checking first, especially if the generator hasn’t run in a while.
- Fuel supply issue. A closed gas valve, an empty propane tank, or low tank pressure will stop a generator from starting even though everything electrical is fine.
- Low-oil shutdown. Most standby generators have a safety switch that blocks startup if oil is below a safe level, to protect the engine. This is doing its job, not malfunctioning.
- Controller in “Off” or showing an alarm. The generator has to be set to “Auto” to respond to an outage automatically. If it’s in “Off,” or if a prior fault triggered an alarm and locked the unit out, it won’t start until that’s cleared.
- Clogged air or fuel filter. Restricted airflow or fuel flow can prevent the engine from turning over cleanly, more common on units that haven’t been serviced in a while.
- Worn spark plug. On the engine side, a fouled or worn spark plug can keep the generator from firing even when everything else checks out.
What you can safely check yourself
You can look at the control panel for a fault code or warning light and write it down, confirm the switch is set to “Auto” rather than “Off,” check that a propane tank isn’t empty or a gas valve isn’t closed, and glance at the oil level gauge if your model has one. If a fault code is showing, many controllers let you clear a one-time alarm by turning the unit to “Off,” waiting about 30 seconds, and switching back to “Auto” once the underlying issue (like low oil) is fixed. None of this requires opening the generator’s enclosure or touching its wiring.
When to call a professional
Call a licensed electrician or generator technician if the fault code repeats after a reset, the battery is dead and needs replacement, you’re not comfortable checking oil or fuel yourself, or the generator hasn’t been serviced in over a year. A generator that won’t start during an outage is exactly the situation it was bought to prevent, so it’s worth having it looked at before you need it, not during a storm. Regular service also catches most of these causes before they leave you without backup power; our answer on how often a standby generator should be serviced covers what that looks like.
