(817) 533-0943Most manufacturers recommend a full service once a year or after about 200 hours of run time, whichever comes first, in addition to the generator’s built-in weekly self-test. Annual service typically covers an oil and filter change, an air filter check, a battery test, and a full load test to confirm the unit will actually carry your home when the power goes out.
What the annual service includes
A standard yearly visit covers an oil and oil filter change, an air filter inspection or replacement, a battery load test, a check of the spark plugs, and a run under load to confirm the generator performs the way it’s supposed to when it actually matters. Generators that run more than the typical few hours a year, or that sit in extreme heat or cold, may need oil changes more often than the standard interval; check your specific model’s manual for that threshold.
The weekly self-test
Between annual services, most standby generators are programmed to run a short self-test on their own, usually 10 to 20 minutes, once a week. This circulates oil, exercises the engine, keeps the battery charged, and burns off condensation that builds up from sitting idle. It’s automatic and doesn’t require you to do anything, but it’s worth glancing at the control panel occasionally to confirm the test ran and didn’t throw a fault code.
Signs it needs service sooner
Call for service outside the normal schedule if the weekly self-test stops running, the control panel shows a fault code, the generator runs louder or rougher than usual, or it failed to start during an actual outage. A generator that skipped its last outage is telling you something needs attention now, not at the next annual visit. If you’re troubleshooting a specific no-start, our answer on why a generator won’t start covers the most common causes. If you’re still deciding between a permanent standby unit and a portable setup in the first place, our guide on standby vs. portable generators lays out the tradeoffs, including what upkeep looks like for each.
