(817) 533-0943Yes. Texas requires electricians to be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), with levels ranging from apprentice up to master electrician, and any business contracting electrical work must hold a Texas Electrical Contractor License (TECL). The main exception is a narrow homeowner exemption that lets you do limited work on a home you own and live in, but it doesn’t extend to panel or service-entrance work.
The TDLR License Levels
| License | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Apprentice | Registered and working under direct supervision while logging hours toward a journeyman license |
| Journeyman | Licensed to perform electrical work after roughly 8,000 hours of supervised experience and passing a state exam |
| Master | Licensed after holding a journeyman license and logging significantly more supervised hours; can supervise other electricians and pull permits |
| Electrical Contractor (TECL) | A business license; the company must employ a licensed master electrician as its electrician of record |
How Do You Verify an Electrician’s License?
TDLR runs a free public license search at tdlr.texas.gov. Search by name, license number, or business name, and it shows the license type, status, and expiration date. Before hiring anyone for panel work, wiring, or a major installation, it’s worth confirming their license is active rather than taking a truck decal at face value.
Why This Matters
An active license means the electrician has met Texas’s testing and experience requirements and is accountable to TDLR if something goes wrong. Unlicensed work can also void a homeowner’s insurance claim and fail a permit inspection outright, since most cities require the permit holder to be a licensed electrician or contractor. If an inspector finds unlicensed work behind a wall, the homeowner is usually the one who has to pay to fix it.
Does a Journeyman or a Master Electrician Show Up to Your Job?
Either one, depending on the company and the scope of the work. A journeyman electrician is fully licensed to perform residential and commercial electrical work on their own. A master electrician is typically the one who holds the contractor license, trains other electricians, and signs off on permits. For most repair and installation calls, a licensed journeyman working for a properly licensed contractor is exactly who should be at your door.
