(817) 533-0943In Texas, anyone doing electrical work for pay is required to hold a license issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), and the business itself needs a Texas Electrical Contractor License (TECL). Hiring someone without one isn’t just a paperwork issue, it affects whether the work is inspected, whether you have recourse if something goes wrong, and whether your homeowner’s insurance will cover a problem later. Here’s what the license actually means, what to ask before you hire, and the red flags worth walking away from.
What the Texas Electrical License Actually Covers
TDLR licenses individual electricians (Journeyman, Master Electrician) and separately licenses electrical contracting businesses (TECL). To pull electrical permits and legally run an electrical contracting business in Texas, the business needs an active TECL number, and the people doing the work need their own individual licenses. This isn’t a certificate you frame and forget, it requires ongoing continuing education and is tied to the license holder’s name, so it can be verified and can be revoked for violations.
Neighbors Electric is a licensed Texas electrical contractor, TECL #41555, based in Crowley and serving the Fort Worth / DFW area. That number can be looked up directly on the TDLR website, which is exactly what we’d tell you to do with any electrician you’re considering, including us.
Why Licensing and Insurance Actually Matter
- Permits and inspections. Panel upgrades, rewires, and most new circuits require a permit in Texas cities. Only a licensed contractor can legally pull that permit, which means the work gets inspected by the city before it’s signed off, an independent check that the job was done to code.
- Insurance coverage. If unpermitted or unlicensed electrical work causes a fire or damage later, homeowner’s insurance can deny the claim. A permitted, inspected job protects you here.
- Liability. A licensed contractor is required to carry insurance. If something is damaged during the work, you have a real path to get it fixed. With an unlicensed handyman, you generally don’t.
- Accountability. A license can be checked, complained against, and revoked. That accountability is most of what you’re actually paying for when you choose a licensed contractor over an unlicensed one.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire
- What’s your TECL number? A legitimate contractor gives this without hesitation. You can verify it yourself on the TDLR license search.
- Are you pulling a permit for this job? For anything beyond a simple repair, panel work, new circuits, rewiring, the answer should be yes.
- Do you carry liability insurance? Ask to see proof, not just a verbal yes.
- Who will actually be doing the work? Some companies send unlicensed helpers under a licensed electrician’s number. Ask whether the person on site is licensed.
- What’s included in the quote? Get it in writing, materials, labor, permit fees, and cleanup.
- Will you provide a written estimate before starting? A phone quote for anything beyond a basic repair should be treated as a rough guess, not a commitment.
Red Flags Worth Walking Away From
- Won’t provide a license number, or the number doesn’t come back active on the TDLR site
- Wants full payment in cash up front, before any work starts
- Says a permit “isn’t necessary” for panel work or a rewire
- No written estimate, pricing only given verbally, with nothing to point back to later
- Pressures you to decide same-day, especially after a storm or outage when scammers commonly target homeowners
- No local business address or the company can’t be found under its business name
How to Verify a License Yourself
Texas maintains a public license search through TDLR where you can look up both individual electrician licenses and business TECL numbers. It takes a minute and tells you whether the license is active, when it was issued, and whether there are any disciplinary actions on file. Doing this before hiring anyone, not just for a big job like a rewire, but for any electrical work in your home, is the single most useful thing you can do to protect yourself.
Journeyman vs. Master Electrician
Not every licensed electrician holds the same level of license. A Journeyman Electrician has completed the required apprenticeship hours and passed a state exam, and can perform most electrical work, generally under the oversight of a Master Electrician or licensed contractor. A Master Electrician has logged additional years of experience and passed a more advanced exam, and is typically the license level required to hold a TECL and operate an electrical contracting business. Neither level is a red flag on its own, what matters is that the person on your job is actually licensed at whatever level the work requires, and that the business itself holds an active TECL.
What Happens If You Hire Unlicensed Work
Beyond the safety risk, unlicensed electrical work creates problems that tend to surface later rather than immediately. A home inspector during a future sale can flag unpermitted electrical work, which can delay closing or require the work to be redone and inspected properly. An insurance company can deny a claim tied to electrical damage if the work behind it wasn’t permitted. And if the unlicensed worker damages something or gets hurt on your property, you likely have no insurance to fall back on. The upfront savings rarely make up for what it costs to untangle later.
