(817) 533-0943Not always. A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 240V circuit, usually rated 40-50 amps, and whether your existing panel can supply that without an upgrade depends on two things: how much capacity the panel has in total, and how much of that capacity is already spoken for by the rest of the house.
What a Level 2 Charger Actually Asks of Your Panel
Most Level 2 home chargers run on a 40-50 amp circuit. That’s a substantial continuous load, on par with a central air conditioner. Whether your panel can take it depends on the panel’s total rated capacity (commonly 100, 150, or 200 amps in Fort Worth-area homes) and how much of that is already committed to HVAC, water heater, range, dryer, and everything else running through the panel.
100-Amp Panels
Older homes across Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area frequently still have 100-amp panels. These can sometimes support a Level 2 charger, but there’s rarely much room to spare once central air, a water heater, and general household load are accounted for. This is common enough that we’ve written a separate breakdown specifically on installing a Level 2 charger on a 100-amp panel, including what a load calculation actually checks.
150-Amp and 200-Amp Panels
Panels at this size more often have headroom for a new 40-50 amp circuit without any upgrade, but “more often” isn’t “always” — a house with a pool pump, a large HVAC system, or an already-full breaker panel can still be tight even at 200 amps. The only way to know for sure is a load calculation, not a guess based on the panel’s rated size alone.
How an Electrician Figures This Out
A licensed electrician runs what’s called a load calculation: adding up the amperage draw of your major appliances and existing circuits against the panel’s rated capacity, per code, to see what’s left over. This takes into account things like whether your AC and EV charger would realistically run at the same time. It’s a fairly quick assessment on-site, and it’s the only real way to answer the panel question for a specific house rather than in general.
If Your Panel Doesn’t Have Room
There are a few paths, and which one makes sense depends on the house:
- A full panel upgrade — replacing the panel with a higher-capacity one (often moving from 100 amps to 150 or 200). This solves the problem for the EV charger and gives room for future additions, but it’s the most involved and most expensive option.
- A subpanel — adding a secondary panel to handle the new circuit without touching the main panel, sometimes a cheaper route if the main panel is otherwise fine.
- A load management device — an energy management system that shares available amperage between the EV charger and other big loads, so the charger backs off automatically when, say, the AC kicks on. This can avoid an upgrade entirely in some cases.
A straightforward panel upgrade in Fort Worth is often simpler and more future-proof than it sounds, especially in a home that’s likely to add more electrical load over time (a second EV, a pool, a home addition).
What This Means for Installation Cost
Panel work is the single biggest cost swing in EV charger installation cost. A house with room to spare pays only for the charger and the circuit. A house that needs a panel upgrade is looking at a meaningfully larger job. There’s no way around finding this out early — it’s the first thing worth checking before you buy a specific charger or set a budget.
