(817) 533-0943Sometimes, yes — but it depends on how much of that 100 amps is already used by your home’s other circuits. A Level 2 charger typically needs a 40-50 amp dedicated circuit, and on a 100-amp panel that’s already running central air, a water heater, and normal household load, there often isn’t enough room left without changes.
What Determines the Answer
The only accurate way to know is a load calculation, which a licensed electrician performs by adding up the amperage draw of your existing major circuits (HVAC, water heater, range, dryer, and so on) against the 100-amp total, following code rules for how those loads are counted. If there’s enough headroom, the EV circuit can often be added as-is. If not, the panel is effectively full.
If There’s Room
Some 100-amp homes, particularly smaller houses with gas appliances (gas water heater, gas range, gas dryer) that keep electrical load lower, do have enough capacity for a Level 2 circuit without any panel work. This is common enough that it’s always worth checking before assuming an upgrade is needed.
If There Isn’t
When the load calculation shows the panel is already tight, there are a few options: a full panel upgrade to 150 or 200 amps, adding a subpanel to handle the new circuit, or installing a load management device that shares amperage between the charger and other big loads so nothing overloads. Which one makes sense depends on the house and, often, on whether you’re likely to add more electrical load down the road (a second EV, an addition, a pool).
Why This Matters Before You Buy a Charger
Panel capacity is the biggest variable in what a Level 2 install ends up costing — see our full EV charger installation cost breakdown for how panel work factors in. It’s worth having this checked before settling on a specific charger model or a budget, since the answer changes what the rest of the job looks like.
