(817) 533-0943A whole-house standby generator is one of the bigger electrical purchases a Fort Worth
homeowner makes, and the price range you see online — anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000
— is wide enough to be useless. This guide breaks down what actually drives the number
so you can judge a quote before you sign it.
What a whole-house generator costs, and why the range is so wide
For a typical single-family home in the DFW area, a professionally installed air-cooled
standby generator usually lands between $8,000 and $18,000 all-in. Two things
move you within that range: the size of the generator (measured in kilowatts)
and the complexity of the electrical and gas hookup at your specific house.
The generator unit itself is often less than half the total — the rest is the transfer
switch, the electrical work, the gas line, the pad, and the permit.
The five things that decide your price
1. Generator size (kW)
A generator sized to run a few essential circuits (fridge, a/c, some lights) costs far less
than one sized to run the whole house at once, including central air on a Texas summer day.
Most homes land on a 22–26 kW air-cooled unit. Oversizing wastes money; undersizing
means the generator can’t carry the load and nuisance-trips. Correct sizing is a load
calculation, not a guess — that is the single most important number in the quote.
2. The automatic transfer switch
The transfer switch is what safely disconnects your home from the grid and switches it to
generator power when the lights go out. It is not optional and it is not the place to cut
corners. A whole-home (“service-rated”) transfer switch costs more than a small
“essential-circuits” switch, but it is what lets the generator actually back up the whole
house.
3. Fuel: natural gas vs. propane
Standby generators here run on natural gas or propane. If you have natural gas at the
street, the plumber taps the existing line — but the line often has to be
upsized so it can deliver enough fuel to the generator without starving your
other appliances. On propane, you need a large enough tank. Fuel work is one of the most
common reasons a quote comes in higher than the headline generator price.
4. The electrical hookup and panel
The generator has to tie into your electrical panel. If your panel is old, full, or a
recalled brand, that work may need to happen first — see our
panel upgrade page. Distance from the
generator pad to the panel and meter also matters: more wire and conduit means more cost.
5. Permit, placement and the pad
Fort Worth (and every surrounding city) requires a permit and inspection for a standby
generator, and there are clearance rules for how far the unit must sit from windows, doors and
the gas meter. A simple pour on level ground near the panel is cheap; a unit that has to go
around the far side of the house, on a built-up pad, is not.
What a fair quote should show you
A quote you can trust breaks these out as separate line items rather than one lump sum:
- The generator make, model and kW rating — tied to a load calculation
- The transfer switch type (whole-home vs. essential circuits)
- Gas line work, including whether the line is being upsized
- Any panel work needed to make the connection
- Permit and inspection
- The labor warranty and the manufacturer’s warranty on the unit
If a quote is a single number with none of that shown, ask for the breakdown before you
compare it to anyone else’s.
Is a whole-house generator worth it in Fort Worth?
After the February 2021 grid failure, a lot of Texas homeowners stopped treating backup
power as a luxury. Whether it pays off for you depends on how often your area loses power, how
long those outages last, and what an outage costs you — spoiled food, a flooded pump, a
home office that can’t run, or a family member who relies on medical equipment. For many homes
a standby generator is overkill and a smaller solution fits better; for others it is the right
call. We will tell you honestly which one you are.
