(817) 533-0943An electrical emergency doesn’t give you much time to think, which is exactly why it helps to know the steps ahead of time. Whether it’s smoke coming from an outlet, a shock from an appliance, or a breaker panel that’s sparking, the right response follows the same basic order: protect people first, cut power if you safely can, then get a professional involved. Here’s how to work through it.
First: Is Anyone in Danger, or Is There Fire or Smoke?
If you see flames, active smoke, or smell something burning that you can’t immediately explain, call 911 first. Don’t try to fight an electrical fire with water – it can conduct electricity back through the stream and make things worse. Get everyone out of the house and let firefighters handle it. Once the fire department has been called and everyone is safe, the rest of this guide still applies for what comes after.
If Someone Has Been Shocked
- Don’t touch the person if they’re still in contact with the electrical source – you can become part of the circuit.
- Cut the power at the breaker if you can reach it safely, or unplug the device using a dry, non-metal object if the breaker isn’t accessible.
- Call 911 if the person lost consciousness, has burns, trouble breathing, or you’re unsure how serious the shock was. Even a shock that seems mild can affect heart rhythm.
- Do not move someone with a suspected injury unless they’re in immediate additional danger.
If You Smell Burning or See Sparks (No Visible Fire)
- Turn off the breaker for that circuit at your panel. If you’re not sure which breaker controls it, or the panel itself is the source, shut off the main breaker.
- Unplug anything connected to the affected outlet or circuit, using the plug itself, not the cord.
- Don’t touch the outlet, switch, or panel again until it’s been inspected.
- Ventilate the area if it’s safe to do so, opening windows or doors nearby.
- Call a licensed electrician right away. This is not something to leave until morning.
If a Breaker Keeps Tripping or the Panel Is Buzzing
A single trip that resets and holds usually isn’t an emergency. But a breaker that trips repeatedly, won’t reset, or a panel that’s buzzing, warm, or discolored is a sign something behind it is wrong. Leave that breaker off, avoid using the circuit, and call for circuit breaker repair rather than resetting it over and over.
If the Power Goes Out After a Storm or Damage
If you see a downed power line, treat it as live no matter how it looks, stay well back, and call your utility company and 911. If power is out inside the house but your neighbors have power, or you smell burning near your meter or panel, that points to a problem on your side of the system rather than a utility outage, and it’s worth having an electrician check it rather than just waiting it out.
If Your GFCI or AFCI Outlet Won’t Reset
GFCI outlets (the ones with test/reset buttons, usually in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors) and AFCI breakers are safety devices designed to trip before a shock or arc fault turns into something worse. If one won’t reset after you’ve pressed the button a couple of times, don’t force it or bypass it by plugging into a different outlet on the same circuit. A GFCI or AFCI that won’t hold is usually detecting a real ground fault or arcing condition, not malfunctioning on its own, and it needs to be diagnosed rather than worked around.
Know Your Panel Before You Need To
The single most useful thing you can do before an emergency happens is get familiar with your breaker panel while everything is calm. Find your main breaker and know how to reach it. If your breakers aren’t labeled, or the labels are outdated from a previous owner, take ten minutes to test and label them so that if something does go wrong, you’re not guessing which one to shut off while smoke is filling the room. This is also a good time to check that your panel has working smoke detectors nearby and that everyone in the house knows the same basic steps in this guide.
What to Tell the Electrician When You Call
Having a few details ready speeds up diagnosis and helps us get the right tools out to you the first trip:
- What you noticed first – a smell, a sound, a shock, a trip – and roughly when it started
- Whether it’s affecting one outlet, one room, or the whole house
- Whether you’ve already shut off a breaker, and which one
- The age of your home and whether you know your panel brand, if visible
- Whether anyone was shocked or injured
You don’t need to have all of this figured out before calling. If you’re not sure, just describe what you’re seeing or smelling and where – that’s enough for us to advise you on next steps over the phone.
What Not to Do
- Don’t spray water on anything electrical that’s smoking or sparking.
- Don’t keep resetting a breaker that won’t hold – repeated trips mean something is actively wrong.
- Don’t ignore a warm outlet, switch, or panel because nothing looks visibly damaged.
- Don’t try to open or work inside your breaker panel yourself.
When to Call an Electrician vs. 911
Call 911 for active fire, smoke, or a serious shock injury. Once that’s handled, or if the situation is serious but not immediately life-threatening – a burning smell, a sparking outlet, a panel that won’t stop tripping, a buzzing sound you can’t explain – call a licensed electrician right away rather than waiting for a normal appointment.
