(817) 533-0943Neighbors Electric is based in Crowley, south of downtown Fort Worth, and North Richland Hills sits on the north side of Tarrant County in the Mid-Cities corridor — call it a 30 to 35 minute drive across town, mostly on 820 and 35W. It’s a straightforward trip, and one we make regularly for the rest of our Mid-Cities work, so scheduling a generator install here isn’t a special trip — it fits into routes we’re already running.
North Richland Hills, often shortened to NRH locally, is the third largest city in Tarrant County and a well-established residential community, with housing stock ranging from mid-century homes near the older parts of town to newer construction further out. That mix matters for generator work, because older electrical services often need a closer look at panel capacity before a transfer switch and generator load get added, where newer homes tend to have more headroom already built in. Either way, the reason homeowners in NRH are asking about standby power is the same one driving the conversation across North Texas: Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 knocked out grid power across the state, including here in Tarrant County, for days at a time, and the risk of it happening again hasn’t gone away.
What’s Actually Involved in a Whole-Home Standby Install
A standby generator is permanent electrical infrastructure, not an appliance you set down and plug in. The install covers several coordinated pieces:
- Sizing the generator to the home. We calculate the home’s load — HVAC, refrigeration, key circuits, or full-panel coverage — and size the unit in kW to match, so it’s neither underpowered nor bigger than the home needs.
- Automatic transfer switch (ATS). Installed at the main panel, the ATS is what makes the system automatic: it detects a utility outage, switches the home over to generator power, and switches back once utility service is stable, with no one flipping switches manually.
- Pad placement. The unit sits on a level pad, positioned at the clearances required by the manufacturer and local code from windows, doors, and the property line.
- Gas line coordination. Most whole-home units run on natural gas or propane, and we coordinate that hookup with a licensed gas contractor so the fuel supply is sized correctly and installed on the same timeline as the electrical work.
- Permitting and inspection. The job requires an electrical permit and typically a gas permit, with inspection of both before the system goes live. In North Richland Hills that runs through the city’s own permitting office alongside Tarrant County requirements.
We install standby generators as licensed electricians, not as a certified dealer for any particular brand, and we’ll lay out the real tradeoffs between manufacturers rather than push one over another.
The Local Angle for North Richland Hills
A good share of NRH’s housing was built in the 1970s through the 1990s, before homes were routinely wired with the panel capacity a generator transfer switch and modern electrical loads call for. Part of our site visit here is checking whether the existing panel has room for the ATS or needs an upgrade first — something we’d rather flag before quoting than discover mid-install. Because North Richland Hills sits fully within Tarrant County, permitting runs through channels we already work with regularly across our Mid-Cities and Fort Worth jobs, which keeps timelines predictable.
Why Licensing Matters on This Job
Neighbors Electric holds Texas Electrical Contractor License #41555. On a generator install, that license is what allows us to pull the electrical permit and wire the transfer switch correctly — the part of the job with real safety stakes. A transfer switch that isn’t wired to fully isolate the home from the grid can backfeed power onto lines utility crews expect to be dead during an outage, which is a hazard, not just a paperwork issue. Licensed work also means the gas connection is coordinated with a licensed gas contractor and the finished system is built to pass inspection, not to get flagged and reworked.
A Flat-Rate Quote, Straight Answer on Timing
We check the panel, the gas service, and the yard, size the generator to the home, and give one flat-rate quote before scheduling anything. Call (817) 533-0943 or reach out through our contact page to get a visit on the calendar.
We also provide generator repair for units already installed, electrical panel upgrades for homes that need more capacity before a generator goes in, and whole-house surge protection for the equipment a generator keeps running during an outage. See our full standby power approach on the whole-home generator installation page, and visit our North Richland Hills electrician page for the rest of our services in the area.
