(817) 533-0943Neighbors Electric is based in Crowley, just south of Fort Worth, and Arlington is well inside our regular service area. As Tarrant County’s second-largest city, Arlington has a housing stock that runs from 1960s and ’70s single-story homes with a single-car garage to newer construction near the city’s outer subdivisions with two- and three-car garages. Whichever end of that range your house falls on, an EV charger install has to be sized and wired to fit the panel and the garage you actually have, not a generic template.
What a Proper Level 2 Install Actually Involves
A Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, the same category of circuit as a dryer or a range, and it needs its own dedicated circuit — it should never share a breaker with anything else in the house. There are two ways to wire it: hardwired directly to the charger, or terminated at a NEMA 14-50 outlet so the charger can be unplugged or swapped later. Both are legitimate; which one we use depends on the charger you’ve bought and how you want the garage laid out.
Before any wire gets pulled, we run a load calculation. This is not optional and it is not a formality. It’s a check of what your panel is already carrying — HVAC, water heater, range, everything — against what a 40- to 50-amp charger circuit will add on top of it. If the math doesn’t work, the fix is a panel upgrade or a load management device, not skipping the calculation and hoping the panel never trips.
From there it’s a matter of running the correct wire gauge for the breaker size (typically 6 AWG or 8 AWG copper depending on amperage and run length), setting the breaker to match, and terminating the circuit correctly at the charger location. The job gets a City of Arlington electrical permit and a final inspection before it’s considered done. We pull the permit; we don’t skip it, and we don’t hand you a charger that will flag an issue the next time you sell the house.
The Arlington Angle: Matching the Install to Your Garage
Arlington’s mix of housing ages means the starting point varies a lot from one job to the next. In older neighborhoods with a 100-amp panel and a single attached garage, the run from the panel to the charger location is often short, but the panel itself may be close to its limit before you add a charger — that’s where the load calculation earns its keep, and where a panel upgrade sometimes has to happen first. In newer construction with 200-amp service and a two- or three-car garage, there’s usually more headroom, but the charger location can be farther from the panel, which changes the wire gauge and conduit needs.
Either way, we look at the actual panel, the actual garage, and the actual distance between them before quoting anything. That’s the only way to get a number that holds.
Why the Licensed, Permitted Version Matters
Neighbors Electric holds Texas Electrical Contractor License TECL #41555. On an EV charger job, that license is the difference between a circuit that’s sized correctly and inspected, and one that trips breakers, overloads a panel that was already close to full, or gets flagged during a home sale because there’s no permit record. We pull the Arlington permit, we do the load calculation correctly, and we schedule the inspection — every time, on every install.
Flat-Rate Pricing, No Surprises
We quote the EV charger install as a flat rate after looking at your panel and garage, not as a guess over the phone that turns into extra charges once we’re on site. If your Arlington home needs a panel upgrade or some wiring repair before the charger circuit can go in, we’ll tell you that up front and price it separately, not bury it. Call (817) 533-0943 or request a quote online to get a real number for your Arlington home.
