(817) 533-0943A microwave trips the breaker because it draws a lot of current in a short burst, usually 1,000 to 1,500 watts, and if it’s sharing a circuit with other kitchen appliances, that combined load overloads the breaker. It can also mean the microwave itself has a fault, or the circuit isn’t sized for it.
The most common cause: sharing a circuit
Most kitchens are built with two 20-amp small appliance circuits meant to cover countertop outlets, but they weren’t necessarily designed with today’s microwave usage in mind. If your microwave shares a circuit with a coffee maker, toaster, or air fryer and you run more than one at the same time, that’s often enough to trip the breaker, especially at breakfast or dinner when several appliances get used back to back. Microwaves pull a heavy but short burst of current when they start, and that spike is often what tips an already-loaded circuit over the edge.
It could be the microwave itself
A microwave that trips the breaker every time you run it, even with nothing else plugged into that circuit, may have an internal fault; a failing capacitor or a short in the magnetron are common culprits in an aging unit. If an older microwave recently started tripping the breaker and nothing about your kitchen setup changed, the appliance is the more likely suspect, not the wiring.
Is it a GFCI trip or a breaker trip?
Worth checking which one actually happened. Kitchen countertop outlets are required to have GFCI protection, either at the outlet itself or at the breaker, and a GFCI trip looks different from an overloaded breaker; the outlet’s reset button will have popped, or a GFCI breaker shows a distinct trip indicator. A GFCI trip usually points to a ground fault, often moisture or a wiring issue at the outlet or in the microwave’s cord, rather than a simple overload.
The real fix: a dedicated circuit
If your microwave, especially a higher-wattage or built-in model, keeps tripping a shared circuit, the long-term fix is giving it its own dedicated circuit so it isn’t competing with other appliances for the same 20 amps. This is standard for over-the-range and built-in microwaves and is often worth doing for a countertop unit too if your kitchen regularly runs several appliances at once. It’s a permitted electrical job, not a DIY outlet swap.
For more on how many things should safely share one circuit, see our guide on how many outlets on one circuit. Neighbors Electric (TECL #41555) installs dedicated circuits for microwaves and other high-draw kitchen appliances throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area, and handles circuit breaker repair if the trips point to a bigger issue.
