(817) 533-0943Air conditioners draw a large surge of current the moment the compressor kicks on, which is far more than they draw while running. If a breaker is undersized, a capacitor is weak, or the compressor is straining under a refrigerant or airflow problem, that startup surge is enough to trip the breaker — and Texas summer heat makes AC units work harder and trip more often than they would in milder weather.
Common causes of an AC tripping the breaker
- Dirty air filter or blocked airflow. Restricted airflow makes the compressor and fan motor work harder to move air, pulling more current than the circuit is rated for.
- Low refrigerant. A low charge forces the compressor to run longer and strain harder to hit the target temperature, increasing current draw.
- Failing start or run capacitor. Capacitors help the compressor start smoothly. A weak one makes the motor draw a heavy surge every time it tries to start, which is one of the most common AC-related breaker trips.
- Dirty condenser coil. A coil caked with dirt or debris (common outdoors in DFW between pollen season and summer dust) makes the outdoor unit work harder to reject heat.
- Compressor nearing the end of its life. An aging compressor can draw more current than it used to, even under normal conditions.
- Undersized or aging breaker. Breakers weaken with age and heat cycles. A breaker that was fine when the AC was new can start tripping years later even with no change in the unit.
- Wiring or connection issue in the disconnect box or circuit. A loose connection at the outdoor disconnect can cause intermittent trips, especially as connections heat and cool with the unit’s cycling.
- Extreme heat load. On the hottest DFW summer afternoons, AC units run longer and harder than usual, which can expose a marginal breaker or aging component that was otherwise getting by.
How to narrow it down
If the breaker trips right when the AC starts up (not while it’s running), that points toward the compressor’s startup surge — often a capacitor or the breaker itself. If it trips after the unit has been running for a while, especially on a hot afternoon, that points more toward airflow, refrigerant, or the compressor straining under load. Either way, this is a fault pattern, not a load problem you can fix by unplugging other things — a dedicated AC circuit typically doesn’t have anything else sharing it.
When to call
Don’t keep resetting the breaker and running the AC repeatedly if it keeps tripping. Each attempt puts more strain on a compressor or connection that’s already struggling, and repeated trips on a dedicated circuit are close to always an electrical or HVAC fault rather than a fluke. This overlaps HVAC and electrical work, and diagnosing which side the problem is on (breaker and wiring versus the unit itself) is exactly what circuit breaker repair covers.
