(817) 533-0943Current electrical code generally requires GFCI outlets anywhere water and electricity are likely to be close together: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, laundry areas, and any outdoor outlet. The exact list depends on which code edition a local jurisdiction has adopted, since cities and counties don’t all update at the same time, but the pattern is consistent across editions.
Rooms and Areas That Typically Require GFCI
- Kitchen countertop outlets, and any outlet within 6 feet of a kitchen sink
- Bathrooms, all outlets
- Garages and accessory buildings with electrical service
- Outdoor outlets, including patios, decks, and porches
- Unfinished basements and crawl spaces
- Laundry areas, and outlets near a laundry or utility sink
- Wet bar sinks and outlets nearby
- Areas near pools, spas, and hot tubs
Why It’s Tied to Water, Not the Room Name
The requirement isn’t really about the room, it’s about proximity to a water source or a damp environment where a person is more likely to be grounded and in contact with a live device at the same time. That’s why an outlet in an otherwise dry hallway right next to a wet bar sink needs GFCI protection, while a bedroom on the far side of the house doesn’t.
Code Varies by Jurisdiction and When a Home Was Built
The National Electrical Code gets revised on a multi-year cycle, and Texas cities and counties adopt and enforce specific editions on their own schedule, so what’s technically required can vary by a few years depending on where a home sits and when it was permitted. A home built or last rewired before GFCI requirements expanded to a given room simply won’t have that protection unless it’s been updated. That’s common, and it’s not automatically a violation of anything, but it does mean the outlet isn’t offering shock protection it would get if wired today.
If Your Home Is Missing GFCI Protection
Older homes in Fort Worth and the surrounding area often have standard outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, or garages that predate current requirements. Adding GFCI protection to those rooms is a straightforward upgrade, either by swapping in a GFCI outlet at the first outlet in the chain or protecting the whole circuit at the panel. It’s one of the more worthwhile electrical upgrades for an older home, since it’s inexpensive relative to the protection it adds. For the difference between GFCI and the other common type of protection, see GFCI vs. AFCI outlets.
Neighbors Electric (TECL #41555), based in Crowley, installs and upgrades GFCI outlets across Fort Worth and DFW. See our outlet installation page, or call (817) 533-0943 to have your home checked.
