(817) 533-0943Match blade span to room square footage: up to about 75 sq ft needs 29″-36″, 75-175 sq ft needs 42″-48″, 175-350 sq ft needs 52″-56″, and anything larger needs 60″+ or two fans. Multiply your room’s length by width in feet to find its square footage, then check it against the chart below.
| Room Size | Blade Span | Example Room |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ~75 sq ft | 29″ – 36″ | Bathroom, laundry room, closet |
| 75 – 175 sq ft | 42″ – 48″ | Bedroom, office, nook |
| 175 – 350 sq ft | 52″ – 56″ | Master bedroom, living room |
| 350+ sq ft | 60″+ or two fans | Great room, open-concept area |
A Quick Example
A 12×14 bedroom is 168 square feet, which puts it in the 42″-48″ range. A 20×20 great room is 400 square feet, past the point where one fan covers the space evenly, so two fans spaced along the room usually work better than one oversized fan stuck in the center of a large ceiling.
Two Other Things That Matter Besides Square Footage
- Ceiling height – blades should sit 8-9 feet off the floor for the best airflow. Ceilings under 8 feet need a flush-mount fan; ceilings over 9 feet need an extended downrod to bring the fan down to that same effective height.
- Box rating – the electrical box the fan hangs from has to be rated for a ceiling fan’s weight and vibration, not just a light fixture. This matters especially in older Fort Worth homes where the existing box may have been installed decades ago for a plain fixture and was never rated for a fan.
If your room falls between two sizes on the chart, it usually makes more sense to round up rather than down. A slightly larger fan run on a lower speed setting still moves air more evenly than an undersized fan running at full speed.
For the full breakdown, including CFM airflow ratings and mount types, see our guide on how to choose the right ceiling fan size. For the installation itself, from box rating to wiring, see ceiling fan installation.
