(817) 533-0943A burning smell from an outlet almost always means something behind the wall plate is overheating, usually a loose wire connection, a worn-out outlet, or a circuit carrying more load than it’s rated for. Stop using that outlet immediately, unplug anything connected to it, and turn off the breaker that controls it if you can safely identify it. Don’t touch the outlet itself. If you see any smoke or the smell is strong, call 911 first, then call a licensed electrician.
What Usually Causes It
A few things tend to be behind a burning smell at an outlet:
- A loose wire connection inside the outlet box, which creates resistance and heat every time current flows through it
- An overloaded circuit, especially if the outlet is powering a space heater, window AC unit, or several high-draw devices at once
- An aging or worn-out outlet whose internal contacts no longer grip a plug firmly, causing arcing
- Water intrusion or corrosion, particularly on exterior or garage outlets
- A problem further back on the circuit, including at the breaker panel itself
None of these get better by ignoring them. A loose connection that’s overheating today will keep overheating every time that outlet is used, and the risk goes up rather than down.
What to Do Right Now
- Unplug anything plugged into the outlet.
- Turn off the breaker for that circuit at your panel. If you don’t know which one it is, or you’re not comfortable identifying it, shutting off the main breaker is the safer move.
- Don’t touch the outlet or cover plate – both can be hot even without visible damage.
- Open a window or door nearby if it’s easy to do.
- If you see smoke, sparks, or active flame, call 911 before anything else.
What Not to Do
Don’t reset the breaker just to see if the smell goes away, and don’t keep using the outlet because it seems fine now. A burning smell means heat has already built up somewhere in that circuit, and the underlying cause, whether it’s a loose connection or an undersized wire, doesn’t fix itself.
When to Call an Electrician
Call right away, not at your next convenient opening. A burning smell at an outlet is one of the more reliable early signs of an electrical fire risk, and it’s much cheaper and safer to have it diagnosed now than after it’s caused real damage. We’re TECL-licensed (#41555), based in Crowley, and serve Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area.
If your outlet smells like it’s burning, call (817) 533-0943 now, or visit our emergency electrician page for immediate help.
