(817) 533-0943A dead outlet with a breaker that hasn’t tripped usually points to one of three things: a GFCI outlet elsewhere on the circuit has tripped and cut power downstream, a wire connection inside the outlet or box has loosened or failed, or the outlet itself has simply worn out. None of these show up as a tripped breaker because the breaker only reacts to overload or a short, not to a failed connection or a dead device.
Check for a Tripped GFCI First
Outlets are often wired in a chain, and a single GFCI outlet can protect every regular outlet downstream of it on the same circuit. If that GFCI trips, everything after it loses power, even outlets in a completely different room. Check kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor outlets for a GFCI with a popped-out test/reset button. Pressing reset there can restore power to outlets you wouldn’t expect it to affect.
A Loose or Failed Wire Connection
Inside the outlet box, wires connect either by being wrapped around a screw terminal or pushed into a spring-loaded “backstab” hole on the back of the outlet. Backstab connections in particular are prone to loosening over time, and a loose connection can cut power to that outlet, and anything wired after it, without ever pulling enough current to trip a breaker. This is one of the more common causes of a single dead outlet in an otherwise normal room.
A Worn-Out Outlet
Outlets have a working life. The internal contacts that grip a plug wear down with repeated use, and the outlet can simply stop making a reliable connection or stop passing power at all, independent of the wiring behind it. This is especially common in outlets that see heavy use, like a kitchen counter or an entertainment center.
A Switched or Half-Hot Outlet
Some outlets, especially in living rooms and bedrooms, are wired so a wall switch controls half or all of the outlet, usually for a lamp. If the switch got bumped off, or someone assumed it was decorative, the outlet reads as dead even though nothing is actually wrong.
When to Call an Electrician
Checking for a tripped GFCI is safe to do yourself. Opening an outlet to check the wiring behind it is not something to do without turning off the circuit at the panel first, and if the outlet feels warm, shows scorch marks, or you smell anything burnt, stop and call someone rather than troubleshooting it live. Neighbors Electric (TECL #41555) handles outlet repairs and circuit breaker issues across Fort Worth and DFW. See our outlet repair page, or if the problem turns out to be at the panel, our circuit breaker repair page. For background on the two types of built-in outlet protection, see GFCI vs. AFCI outlets. Call (817) 533-0943 or contact us to get it diagnosed.
