(817) 533-0943Aluminum branch wiring, common in homes built between 1965 and 1973, isn’t automatically dangerous, but it’s riskier than copper because the connections at outlets, switches, and fixtures loosen and overheat over time. It’s safe when properly remediated with the right connectors; it’s a fire risk when left as-is with standard copper-rated devices.
What makes it risky
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper and oxidizes at the surface, both of which work against a tight connection at a screw terminal. Over years, that can mean a loose connection carrying current, which generates heat. That heat is what leads to warm cover plates, flickering lights, or in the worst cases, a fire starting inside a wall or junction box.
What makes it safe
The wire itself isn’t the hazard; the untreated connection points are. Once every connection is properly remediated, whether with COPALUM crimps, AlumiConn connectors, or in some cases a full house rewire, aluminum branch wiring stops being a meaningfully higher risk. The remediation is the whole ballgame. Swapping in a few CO/ALR-rated switches or outlets helps at those specific spots, but it doesn’t cover the splices inside junction boxes, so it’s a partial step, not a finished job.
How to know where your home stands
If your home was built between 1965 and 1973 and you haven’t had it inspected, that’s the first step, not guessing. An electrician can check the panel and a sample of outlets to see whether the connections have already been addressed or still need it. It’s also worth asking about directly if you’re buying an older home in that window, since it can affect both the home inspection findings and what your insurance carrier is willing to underwrite.
What if you’re not sure your home is in that age range?
Aluminum branch wiring shows up almost exclusively in homes built or significantly added onto in that specific window because that’s when copper prices made aluminum the cheaper substitute. A home built in 1980 or a home built in 1960 is unlikely to have it for that reason. If your home’s build date is close to that range, or you’ve had additions done and aren’t sure which era they’re wired to, that’s a reasonable thing to have checked rather than assumed either way.
