(817) 533-0943To reset a tripped breaker, turn off or unplug whatever was running on that circuit, find your electrical panel, locate the breaker sitting in the middle position instead of fully ON, push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, stop and call an electrician instead of resetting it again.
Steps to reset a breaker
- Turn off or unplug whatever was running on the circuit when it tripped, if you know what that was.
- Find your electrical panel, usually in a garage, utility closet, or on an exterior wall.
- Look for the breaker that isn’t lined up with the others; it’ll sit in a middle position instead of fully ON or fully OFF.
- Push that breaker firmly all the way to OFF first.
- Then flip it firmly back to ON.
- Plug devices back in one at a time to see if the circuit holds.
What not to do
- Don’t remove the panel cover or touch anything inside it. Resetting the switch on the outside is normal homeowner territory; anything behind the cover isn’t.
- Don’t hold a breaker in the ON position with tape, a wedge, or by hand if it won’t stay on its own. A breaker that won’t hold is telling you there’s a real problem, not asking to be forced.
- Don’t keep resetting the same breaker over and over if it trips again right away. Each reset is a chance for a fault to do damage before the breaker catches it.
When a reset isn’t the actual fix
If the breaker trips again within seconds, trips with nothing plugged in, or you smell burning or see a scorch mark near the panel or an outlet, that’s not a circuit you should keep resetting. It’s a sign of a short, a ground fault, or a failing breaker, and those need a licensed electrician to diagnose safely.
Our guide on why your circuit breaker keeps tripping walks through what usually causes repeated trips, and our answer on whether a breaker that keeps tripping is dangerous covers when it’s urgent. Neighbors Electric (TECL #41555) provides circuit breaker repair throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area. If resetting isn’t holding, call (817) 533-0943.
