(817) 533-0943Most whole-house rewires take one to two weeks of on-site electrician work: a small 2-3 bedroom home often wraps in about a week, a larger or older home can take two weeks or more. Add permitting and inspection, and the full project usually runs three to six weeks start to finish.
If you’re not sure you need a full rewire yet, our guide on signs your house needs rewiring is a good place to start before you plan around a timeline.
What affects the timeline
- Home size. More square footage means more circuits, more outlets, and more runs of wire to pull, which adds days directly.
- Occupied vs. vacant. An empty house lets the crew work straight through. An occupied home is usually staged room by room so you still have power and access, which stretches the calendar even though the total labor hours are similar.
- Age and construction. Older homes with plaster walls, tight crawl spaces, or previous patch-in work take longer to fish wire through than a home with easy attic and wall access.
- Whether the panel is being replaced too. Rewiring and a panel upgrade often happen together, and that adds its own day or two of work plus a separate inspection.
Permits and inspections add time beyond the labor
A rewire in Fort Worth requires an electrical permit and a city inspection before the walls get closed back up, and that inspection has to be scheduled and passed. That’s on top of the electrician’s on-site days, which is why the full project timeline runs longer than the labor time alone. This step isn’t optional, since the city has to sign off before drywall goes back.
Can you stay in the house during a rewire?
In most cases, yes, though expect a few days of one room or area being without power while that section is being worked on, plus some noise and dust from opening walls or attic access. Your electrician can usually sequence the work to keep the kitchen and at least one bathroom powered most of the time.
For what a rewire typically costs on top of the time it takes, see our guide on cost to rewire a house. Neighbors Electric (TECL #41555) handles house rewiring for homes throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding DFW area, and we’ll give you a realistic timeline for your specific house before work starts, not a generic estimate.
