(817) 533-0943In most cases, yes. Texas doesn’t have one statewide permit rule for EV chargers, so it comes down to your city, but most jurisdictions, including Fort Worth, require a permit any time you add a new dedicated circuit, hardwire a charger, or touch your electrical panel. Simply plugging a portable Level 1 charger into an existing, properly grounded outlet usually doesn’t need one.
When You Need a Permit
- Installing a new 240-volt circuit for a Level 2 charger
- Hardwiring a charging unit directly to the panel
- Upgrading your panel or service to support the charger’s load
- Adding a new outlet where one didn’t exist before
When You Might Not Need One
If you’re using the cable that came with your EV and plugging it into an existing, code-compliant outlet, most cities don’t require a separate permit for that. The moment you’re adding new wiring or a dedicated circuit, though, you’re back into permit territory. Since rules vary by city, the safest move is to confirm with whoever is doing the installation rather than go by what a neighbor or a forum post said.
Why the Permit Matters
EV chargers pull a lot of continuous current for hours at a time, more than most household circuits are designed for. Permitted work gets inspected to confirm the circuit, breaker, and wiring are sized correctly under NEC Article 625, the code section covering electric vehicle charging equipment. Skipping that step is how houses end up with an overheating breaker or a charger that trips constantly under load. It can also matter later, since an unpermitted circuit is the kind of thing that surfaces during a home sale or an insurance claim, long after the installer is gone.
Does Your Panel Need an Upgrade Too?
It depends on what’s already on it. A Level 2 charger draws enough continuous current that it can push an older or already-loaded panel past its rated capacity. Part of what an electrician checks before pulling the permit is whether your existing panel has room for the new circuit, or whether the panel needs to be upgraded first. That’s a normal finding, and it’s better to know during planning than after the charger is installed and tripping the breaker.
