(817) 533-0943Mansfield is one of the closer stops on our map. Neighbors Electric is based in Crowley, just north of Mansfield on the south side of Fort Worth, and it’s a short drive down 287 or through Kennedale — typically 20 to 25 minutes. That matters for generator work more than it might for a small repair, because a whole-home install usually takes a full day and sometimes a return trip for gas coordination or final inspection, and being close by keeps that process moving.
Mansfield has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the metroplex for years, with new subdivisions filling in south and east of the older town center. Most of the city sits in Tarrant County, with small slivers extending into Johnson and Ellis counties on the south side. That growth is part of why standby generators have become a common ask here — newer neighborhoods with larger homes, longer driveways, and higher electrical loads are exactly the kind of housing stock where losing power for days is more than an inconvenience. And Texas homeowners don’t need much convincing on that point after Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 left large stretches of the state, Tarrant County included, without grid power for days in freezing conditions.
What a Standby Generator Install Covers
Installing a whole-home generator is electrical work plus coordinated trades, not a single afternoon job. The pieces:
- Sizing to the home’s load. We calculate what the home needs to run — HVAC, well pump if the property has one, refrigeration, key circuits, or the entire panel — and size the unit in kW accordingly, rather than defaulting to whatever’s on the truck.
- Automatic transfer switch. The ATS is wired into the main panel and does the actual work of detecting a utility outage, switching the home to generator power, and switching back once utility service is restored, without anyone flipping a breaker manually.
- Pad and placement. The unit needs a level pad set at the correct clearance from the house, windows, and doors per manufacturer specs and local code — something worth planning around a home’s layout before the pour, not after.
- Gas hookup coordination. Most standby units run on natural gas or propane, and we coordinate that connection with a licensed gas contractor so the fuel line is sized and installed correctly alongside the electrical work.
- Permit and inspection. A whole-home generator install requires an electrical permit and typically a gas permit, with inspection of both before the system is approved for use.
We’re licensed electricians who install standby systems, not a certified dealer tied to one generator brand — we’ll walk through the real differences between manufacturers rather than steer toward one.
The Local Angle for Mansfield
Because Mansfield straddles three counties, the permitting jurisdiction depends on exactly where a home sits — most Mansfield addresses run through the City of Mansfield and Tarrant County, but the small Johnson and Ellis County slivers can shift which office handles the permit. We check that before we quote a job, not after the pad is poured. Being based just up the road in Crowley means we’re already familiar with Mansfield’s inspection contacts and typical turnaround, which keeps the schedule realistic instead of optimistic.
Why the License Matters
Neighbors Electric holds Texas Electrical Contractor License #41555, which is what lets us pull the electrical permit and legally perform this work. On a generator install, that licensing covers the part that carries real risk: wiring the transfer switch so it isolates the home from the grid completely when the generator kicks on. Done wrong, that’s a backfeed hazard for line crews, not a minor code issue. It also means the gas side gets coordinated with a licensed gas contractor instead of treated as an afterthought, and the finished system passes inspection the first time.
A Flat-Rate Quote
We look at the panel, the gas service, and the yard, size the system to the home, and give one flat-rate number before anything’s scheduled. Call (817) 533-0943 or reach out through our contact page to set up a visit.
We also handle generator repair for existing standby systems, electrical panel upgrades for homes that need more capacity first, and whole-house surge protection to keep the equipment a generator powers safe from spikes. See our full approach on the whole-home generator installation page, and check our Mansfield electrician page for everything else we cover in the area.
